As a schoolboy, I remember reading about the Susquehannocks, who farmed the land, traded with settlers, and left their namesake on many landmarks. But I don’t remember reading about the overwhelming wars, or how they were devastated by European smallpox, or how their story ended so violently. Tracing one’s genealogy is always a daunting task, but trying to find an unnamed native American ancestor grows increasingly difficult as the number of generations increases. Of course, a major obstacle is that, until recently, interracial marriages were viewed with disdain and shame. The Pawnee Indian School in Pawnee, Oklahoma, was one of many federally funded boarding schools built around the turn of the century for the purpose of assimilating Indian youth into white culture. In other words, they strove to take as much of the Indian out of the Indian and to replace it with the most rudimentary tools for “civilized” life.
